The student has one job: to convince him he is coming back. You have two. The second one is harder.
BATTLE 01
"Why do you need training in something you already do?"
If you have been a sous chef for six years and you are going to be a sous chef, that is not training. That is work. And a Trainee program must not repeat what you already know.
DEFENCEDon't list what you know. List what you are missing: scale, systems, standards. "I have never worked in a kitchen doing 600 covers a day, or with American HACCP protocols."
BATTLE 02
"You have a career. Why would you come back?"
The student has a degree waiting for him. You are leaving a job for twelve months. To the officer, you are the bigger risk of staying.
DEFENCEA position held for you, written confirmation from your employer, and a market that is growing. The training is a step in your career here — not an escape from it.
Eligibility
Two routes. Know which one is yours.
You have to say which route you qualify under, and back it up with documents.
ROUTE 1
Degree + 1 year of experience
A degree or professional certificate from an institution outside the United States, plus at least one year of relevant professional experience outside the U.S. in the field of the training.
No degree — but at least five years of relevant professional experience outside the U.S. in the field of the training. This is the route for people who came up from the floor.

Duration — read carefully
A Trainee program runs from a few months up to 18. But for Hospitality & Tourism and agriculture the maximum is 12 months. If you are in hospitality and you say "eighteen months", you have just told him you never read your own program.
Your DS-7002
Progression, not repetition.
TRAINING PLAN · F&B MANAGEMENT · 12 MONTHS
What a plan that passes looks like
Notice: each phase is more advanced than the one before. That is what makes it a Trainee program — not the number of months.
Leadership & strategyRunning a shift independently, training the team, planning events for 300+ guests, reporting to the GM. Level: management.
REVIEW
Midpoint + final evaluationMandatory for programs over six months. Your mentor completes them, the sponsor records them in SEVIS.
Quick test — do it tonight
Look at Phase 3 of your plan. Could you do it already today? If the answer is yes, your plan is work, not training. They will see it. Call us tonight.
Cheat sheet
Open the DS-7002. Fill this in.
Most candidates never open the plan they are applying with. It shows immediately. Fill these fields now — this is everything you need tomorrow.
Fill it in, then read it out loud once. That's it. This covers most of what you will be asked.
Before the window
How the morning actually goes.
You have been through interviews before — but not this one. Most of the stress on the day comes from not knowing the sequence.
STEP 01
Outside, in line
Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment, not an hour. Phone, bag, laptop, headphones and smartwatch stay in the car.
STEP 02
Security
Metal detector, jacket off, documents out of the folder. Slow and calm.
STEP 03
Document window
Passport, DS-160 confirmation, DS-2019 and DS-7002. You get a number, then you wait — sometimes 30 to 60 minutes.
STEP 04
Fingerprints
Four fingers of the left hand, four of the right, then both thumbs. Clean, dry hands.
STEP 05
The interview window
You stand. The officer is behind glass, speaking through a microphone. 90 seconds to 3 minutes. For a trainee, most of it is about your experience and your reasons for returning.
STEP 06
The decision
You hear it at the window, immediately. If approved, your passport stays and comes back by courier within a few working days.
The rules behind the questions
Five rules. That's the whole interview.
Section 214(b)
Every applicant is assumed to be an intending immigrant until they show otherwise. The burden of proof is on you. For a mid-career professional leaving a job, this presumption weighs heavier, not lighter.
No duplication
The training must give you skills you do not already have. It cannot repeat your existing job in a different country. This is the rule your DS-7002 exists to satisfy.
Training, not staffing
Full-time, 32 or more hours a week, under a named supervisor, with no unskilled or casual labour and no more than 20% clerical work. No second job. Not one hour.
Repeat participation
After completing a Trainee program you must live outside the United States for two years before another Trainee program. A previous SWT or Internship is different — and a J-1 you completed and returned from on time is an advantage, not a problem.
Section 221(g)
Not a refusal. Something is missing, or the case needs further review. You get a letter that says what happens next.
Full simulation
You are at the window.
Twelve questions, follow-ups included — including the ones officers reserve for experienced applicants. Turn on Voice to hear the question instead of reading it, and Pressure to answer against the clock. At the end you get a decision and the officer's notes.
WINDOW 04 · U.S. EMBASSYREADY
Say it out loud
Reading is not practice.
You have given presentations, led shifts, handled complaints. None of that helps if you have never said these ten sentences out loud in English. Twenty seconds each. Answer before you look at the model answer.
QUESTION 1 / 10
Press start and answer out loud.
20
A STRONG ANSWER SOUNDS LIKE THIS
If you can say all ten out loud without reading, you are ready. If you stumble on one, that is the one he will ask.
How much to say
Twenty seconds. Then stop.
The most common mistake experienced candidates make is giving a speech. The officer has under two minutes for the whole interview. If one question takes three, he stopped listening a while ago.
OFFICER
Why not learn this in your own country?
✗ WRONG · 2 MIN 40 SEC
Well, you know, in Macedonia the situation is difficult, the hotels are small, and also the economy, and my family always said... and I have been thinking about America since I was a child, and my colleague went last year and he told me...
OFFICER'S ATTENTION: GONE
✓ RIGHT · 18 SEC
The largest hotel in Skopje has 200 rooms. My host property has 500 and uses revenue systems our market does not have yet. That scale does not exist at home.
OFFICER'S ATTENTION: HELD
OFFICER
Okay. And after the program?
The rule is simple
Two or three sentences, then stop. If he wants more, he will ask. The silence after your answer does not bother him. It only bothers you — and that is exactly why people start saying more than they should.
If he cuts you off mid-sentence
Stop immediately. Don't finish the sentence. Being interrupted does not mean you said something wrong — it means he got the answer he needed.
Fast drill
Twelve questions. Twenty seconds each.
Tap a question to see a model answer. Read it, close it, then say your own version out loud in 20 seconds.
Answers
Same question. Three outcomes.
For a Trainee everything turns on one word: more advanced.
❝ What will you learn that you don't already know?
✗ WEAK"I will do the same work, but in America — the experience itself is valuable."
✓ GOOD"I will learn how American hotels operate at a bigger scale."
★ STRONG"I have never worked with revenue management systems or P&L reporting by department — we don't use them here. My plan builds from operations, to financial management, to running shifts independently. That progression doesn't exist in my current role."
❝ Why would you come back? You are leaving a good job.
✗ WEAK"I'll see how it goes. Maybe there will be a better opportunity there."
✓ GOOD"My family is here and I plan to return."
★ STRONG"My employer is holding my position — I have written confirmation. New hotels are opening in Skopje and Ohrid and nobody here has U.S. operations experience. I come back as the person who does. That is worth more to me than a job in America."
❝ How long is your program?
✗ WEAK"Eighteen months, I think. Maybe I can extend it."
✓ GOOD"Twelve months."
★ STRONG"Twelve months — 1 March to 28 February. In hospitality the maximum for a Trainee program is twelve months, and my DS-2019 shows exactly those dates."
❝ Will you earn more there than at home?
✗ WEAK"Yes, much more. That's a big part of why I'm going."
✓ GOOD"I don't know exactly what the salary is."
★ STRONG"Probably, yes — but that isn't why I'm going. The salary lasts twelve months. The revenue and operations experience changes my career for the next twenty years."
Red flags
Sentences that kill a Trainee visa.
Tap each one to see why.
The forbidden list
Ten sentences. Never.
If one of these slips out tomorrow, the interview is over. It doesn't matter how good the other answers were. Read them once and forget them.
❌ "I want to stay longer."Immigrant intent, said out loud.
❌ "Maybe I'll find opportunities there."The same thing in nicer words. He hears the difference — there isn't one.
❌ "I'm mainly going for the money."Trainee is a training program. This disqualifies you by your own words.
❌ "I'll be doing the same job I do now."Training must not duplicate existing experience. This is the end of a Trainee visa.
❌ "I already know everything about this work."If you know everything, why do you need training?
❌ "I don't know exactly."About your plan, your mentor, your dates — "I don't know" does not exist.
❌ "My agency prepared everything."One sentence and the answers stop being yours. Everything before it becomes suspect.
❌ "I resigned in order to go on this program."If you have nowhere to come back to, there is no reason to come back.
❌ "My relatives there will help me."Relatives are allowed. Relatives as a plan B for staying are not.
❌ "Eighteen months."If you are in hospitality, the maximum is twelve. You just told him you don't know your own program.
From the other side of the glass
What is the officer checking?
Five checks. For a Trainee, the decision is made on the second and the fifth.
Don't panic
If you don't understand the question.
Experienced candidates hate asking. That instinct costs more visas than a weak accent ever has.
✓ "Sorry, could you please repeat the question?"The most normal sentence in the world. They hear it a hundred times a day.
✓ "Could you speak a little slower, please?"Nobody will penalise you. It shows you are paying attention.
✓ "Do you mean my current employer, or the host company?"Asking to clarify is confidence, not weakness.
✗ Guessing what was asked.Answering a different question looks like avoidance — the worst possible look for a trainee.
✗ Covering the gap with more words.Long answers from an experienced applicant read as nervousness, not authority.
How you look while you talk
You are a professional. Stand like one.
✓
Look at the officer, not at your documents
✓
Calm, level voice. You are describing your career, not pleading for something
✓
Answer, then stop. Let the silence be his problem
✓
Business casual. The way you would dress to meet a general manager
✗
Pushing documents through the window before he asks
✗
Listing your achievements — he asked what you will learn, not what you have done
✗
Explaining the economy of the country
✗
Arguing, or asking why, if the answer is no
The folder
What you bring tomorrow
✓
Passport — valid 6+ months
✓
DS-2019 — original, signed
✓
DS-7002 — signed by all three parties, and read
✓
DS-160 confirmation with barcode
✓
SEVIS I-901 fee receipt
✓
Diploma (Route 1) or evidence of 5 years' experience (Route 2)
Written confirmation that your position is being held — if you can get it, this is your strongest document
✗
A termination agreement — it signals you have nowhere to return to
✗
A DS-7002 you are seeing for the first time while standing in line
After the window
Three things can happen.
Approved
The officer keeps your passport and tells you it is approved. The visa is printed and returned by courier, usually within a few working days. Check every detail — name, dates, category, sponsor.
221(g) — more information needed
You get a letter listing what is missing, or telling you the case is in administrative processing. For trainees this is often about proof of experience or the training plan. Send us the letter the same day.
214(b) — refused
Either he was not convinced this is training rather than employment, or not convinced you would come home. No appeal, but you can reapply — and only once something real has changed, such as a written confirmation that your position is held. Don't argue at the window. Take the letter, thank him, leave, and call us.
